Workplace Essential Skills – Problem Solving

Each individual on our team is hired to solve problems effectively. And I think that we’re more concerned about the destination of this is the problem and this is the solution. and less concerned with the road map of how we got there. I frequently use problem solving skills. The biggest issue that we’ve had lately is our staffing. We’ve had some short staffed time so I have to be able to think critically and be able to know how to fill those holes so that our facility is not left without a radiology tech on staff. After about two months of working in the core I got promoted to supervisor. Part of being a good supervisor is being able to problem solve. There’s a possibility of cans getting stuck up top. Which if they get wedged in there it’s really hard to get them undone. We can run into weight discrepancies. Sometimes it’ll say it’s a certain weight on the manifest but in the tech it’s saying something completely different. Our main job is really to keep the pilots safe and to not have any issues with the package not getting to the place that it needs to be on time. ER nursing is not very cut and dry. You tend to problem solve pretty regularly. How are we going to get this patient home? You know, how is this family going to take this news? Everyone doesn’t come in with the same socioeconomic backgrounds. Everyone doesn’t come in with the same, obviously, medical history. It’s not like we’re taking care of just cardiac patients or just OB patients. We take care of everything and anything. And so when people present and come to our doors we’re here to care for them. And sometimes we have to figure out how it’s best to do that. What makes a good worker in this industry is somebody that understands the challenges of moving freight cars. Trying to figure out how to get these cars that are spread across 10 different tracks out here all the way down to the main line and then off to the customer track, so compressing all that, all these different parts and pieces and getting it into one train and then off to the customer can be pretty challenging at times.
