– When I was a kid I definitely thought I was gonna be either
a singer or an actress. Dunno how I thought I was
gonna be a good actor, since I’m like, absolutely
horrible at lying. (chuckles) But, now I’m on the track
for journalism instead. Being a writer is what makes me happy. Even though it’s difficult,
it brings me a lot of joy, like, seeing my finished piece, and like, putting it out there, spreading this needed
information to people. Even if it’s just covering an event, or like, some little local news. That drives me, ’cause I know, like, I’m
gonna be proud of myself once it’s done. I know there’s a lot of
bias that comes in now, especially in our current
political climate, but I’ve always thought, like,
especially in news-writing, the facts are the only truth out there. So, I think a responsible journalist is one who reports unbiasedly, they don’t try to sway the
readers with what they’re saying, they just report on the facts, because, like, that’s the truth,
there’s nothing more to it. I have a lot of side-projects, I’d say, that are a little bit more
creative, outside of journalism. Like, doodling, drawing
poorly, taking photos. I like it because it can
interplay with journalism, in like, a really good cohesive way. You see a lot of different
creative magazines and even like, online papers
that draw people in with that, and then direct them to the
news stories and the facts, and I think it’s a really good way to get people’s attention. A lot of my jobs that
I’ve done just part-time have been in the food service industry, and that has unexpectedly
helped me in journalism, just being able to be patient, and reword how I’m saying things when I’m trying to ask interview questions or communicate things in a story. Teaching me to be more
confident when I speak, things like that have
helped my journalism career in so many weird little ways. In 10 years, it’s hard not to focus on
what my career will be, since everything in my life
right now is prepping for that. I hope to be a journalist,
and that better happen. I can just imagine myself with my dog, heading into like, my favorite cafe, overlooking like, some
beautiful view in Seaport, sitting down with my laptop, and just like, finally
having achieved this goal I’ve been working on for so long. If that could be a day in
10 years, it’d be great.
