Let’s get started. You’re currently the owner of Profitable Ideas and you previously worked in Technology Sales. What were some of your responsibilities when you were working in Technology Sales? Mostly I was responsible for generating business. That involved communicating with customers and finding customers and helping them solve business problems using technology. Who did you interact with on a typical day. I spent most of my time with customers. Or with prospects, getting to know a lot of people and what kind of business problems they had that perhaps technology could be used to solve. I also spent a fair amount of time working with business unit leaders as well as engineers. What are important personal characteristics for success in this area. Well you might expect me to say technical competency – which is of course important. However, I would say that even more important is good communication skills and being able to relate to people and interact with them on an interpersonal level. What kind of work or internship experience would employers look for in a job applicant in technology sales The more experience you can have in the field the better off you will be. There’s just no substitute. There’s no academic way you can learn how to interact with the customers without actually doing it. What are the employment prospects in this geographic area? And do people really want to hire women? Actually the employment prospects here in the Metropolitan area are quite good. You just need to look around and you’ll see opportunity all over the place. Continue working your network and you’ll find opportunities in lots of different companies. And I would say, it’s a strategic advantage to be a woman. Because women have phenomenal interpersonal skills. My strongest assets are communication skills and relationship building. I love to be with people. Are these important assets in this field? If you’d like to be in sales or business development those are phenomenal skills to have. All of sales is building relationships. They have to trust you. They have to believe that you know what you’re talking about. You have to be helpful and cooperative in putting together a solution that meets their needs. So those are great skills to have. Lori, for my last questions do you have any words of caution or encouragement that can help me in the area of Technology Sales? I only have words of encouragement. I would say don’t be afraid to fail. Because sometimes things don’t always go your way. They’re unpredictable. But keep trying. And learn from your mistakes. I would also tell you that you need to be proud of your accomplishment. I wouldn’t say over do it and toot your own horn But make sure people know what you’ve been successful at. What kinds of things that you’ve done. And don’t be afraid to show those off.
