♪ You know that you’re my super star ♪ – (FBE) So, how was it recreating
some of those TikToks today? – You know, this is not as easy
as I thought it was gonna be, but it was really fun.
– I got a little sweaty! It was more challenging
than I thought, but I think, yeah, I have to get on
this TikTok train. – That was really fun.
I feel like I have a newfound respect for people who come up
with these challenges. They are kinda hard to get perfectly.
And I feel like the people especially who come up with them
and choreograph them, that’s really kind of impressive.
– (FBE) So, with TikTok being a popular app around the globe,
dance trends can now be quickly shared around the world,
making them more viral than ever before.
So, as a dancer, how do you think dance trends on social media
in general have affected the dance community?
– I think it’s made it– I think it’s been a great effect
on the dance community. I think it’s made it become
more well-known, just the dance community in general
and made it become its own popular thing.
– It’s kind of almost brought them together more.
– Yeah. – Just because it’s like,
“Oh, I know that dance.” “Oh, me too! Me too!”
And you just start dancing together even if it’s
with a complete stranger or someone you’ve never
even met before. – Usually, people just think
of dancers as the separate group, but now everybody dances.
So, I think it’s actually really cool, because now a bunch of people
are just trying to dance and have fun with it
instead of making it this stressful sport.
– The professional dance world and the dance community,
we have to stay a part of these trends.
And we think it’s cute. Sometimes, we completely despise it.
There will be so many creative choreographers
and creative artists and dancers that will have such genius routines
and genius movement, but it doesn’t get a lot of likes
or doesn’t get a lot of attention, because it’s not a “famous trend.”
– (FBE) With social media being more prevalent than ever before,
it seems that numbers and followers are one of the most
important aspects to succeed, especially in entertainment.
So, do you feel like social media has changed the current
dance industry, in which you need to have a following
to get booked? – In some cases, yes.
In other cases, no. In some cases, yeah,
they wanna know that you have a good following so that you can
promote a product. – I would say more people are
getting booked off their followers. It’s become more of
a who do you know versus actually having
that person actually still go out there and compete
against somebody who may not have as many followers
but might be better. – It’s definitely changed.
I’ve been in the industry for about eight years now.
And I was in it at a really, really young age. And back then,
there was always auditions. Always. And nowadays, you don’t even
get auditions. You just get direct calls (snaps)
from the choreographers, from the artist, from the company.
They look at your Instagram. That’s your portfolio.
– The new social media craze has definitely impacted
the importance of being popular. You know, 15 years ago,
it didn’t really matter, ’cause no one was paying attention
to your Skype friends or Myspace or whatever it was
a long time ago. But for example, when I first
moved here four years ago, the first they asked me
at an audition was how many followers I had,
and I had 400 at the time. – If you are popular on social media
and as a dancer and that helps you book jobs, by all means.
That’s amazing. I’ve encountered so many people who
are working without the big industry and stuff, and they like
to work low-key. And that’s awesome.
– (FBE) So finally, after taking on these trends today,
can you see yourself getting more into TikTok in the future?
– Yes. I definitely am ready. I downloaded the app.
We’re ready to go. – Yes. I’ll be doing
more TikToks in the future. – I definitely can.
I’m about to go home and make some videos myself.
– Yeah, maybe. Maybe I’ll get my little cousin
to help me with it. (chuckles) – Yes. If I can see more
of these trend dances, of course! (laughs) I didn’t even know!
– Yeah. I literally actually downloaded TikTok last week,
’cause my friend was doing it. And I was like, “Okay,
I need to check this out.” So, I’m definitely
more interested in it. – Yeah! I mean, why not?
I mean, we were on it a lot before, and then we stopped,
and then we got on it again. But yeah, sure.
I mean, super fun. – I think I could.
It’s not such a serious place. I feel like I’m almost like,
“Oh, I don’t want people to see me and laugh.”
But I’m like, “It’s literally all about laughing.”
You know what I mean? It’s not so serious.
So, I need to learn how to stop taking things so seriously.
So, I will probably be making a few TikToks in the future. – Thanks for watching Dancers React.
