Question: So I’ve been hearing about how the SQA awards are coming along, but what are the next steps? Answer: Well we’ve been discussing everything and summarising it down to take back to the SQA office. I’m responsible for writing everything up, putting it through the system, getting it rubber stamped. Next we need to create Assessment Support Packs to support teachers. That needs to be translated into BSL as well, that’s very important. We need to create assessment support videos for teachers to get an idea of what the assessments should look like, so they can then use them in schools. We feel that the different regional varieties of BSL should be in there too, that’s a must. And next, there will be a launch – watch this space! Question: When will the new awards be ready to go? Answer: Really really soon… The awards will start to be rolled out in 2018/19. Question: All four levels? Answer: No, levels 3 and 4. You’ll have to wait for next year, 2019/20, for levels 5 and 6. We’re starting with 3 and 4 to see how they get on and make sure everything’s set up right and then 5 and 6 will be ready to go. It’s really exciting and I’m really looking forward to seeing BSL being valued in schools and more people learning to sign.
