So, another question that I often get asked
is How do you become a motivational speaker? And I think it’s an interesting thought. I
don’t think anybody actually becomes a motivational speaker without one major thing and that is
desire. It is not something that comes easy in the sense, I don’t mean that your desire
doesn’t come easy, but I think once you have that desire the pursuit of actually becoming
a motivational speaker, a speaker that draws an audience, is something that can be difficult
and it can be trying. I can remember the early days, I got asked to teach a class in Toronto.
It was supposed to be a class, slash, motivational speech, and it was supposed to last two whole
days. And I had spoken for two hours previous to that, for no pay, at an event in Las Vegas
where there were almost a thousand people in the room to listen to me speak for two
hours. Again, it was free to them, I was giving my time free, and I was very hyped up by the
number of people in the room. Well shortly thereafter I get asked to go speak in Toronto
where I’m being paid to come and speak there and lo and behold there are fifty four people
in the room. So it was a little bit of a let down for me to see that few number of people
in the room. So there is, becoming one is, does take quite a bit of effort to tell you
the truth. And then there has to be that proving ground. Enough people have to see you, you
have to be able to get over the mistakes you made, you have to be able to look at the evaluations
that people do. I don’t know about other motivational speakers but we have everything we do evaluated
by the students in the class. So we look at those evaluations and we say, Where have we
gone wrong? What can we do better? And then learn from those. And a lot of motivational
speakers or teachers or speakers on the, sort of on the circuit, do get a little daunted
by having maybe two hundred people in the class and have four bad evaluations. You say,
Well, wow, that means you had a hundred and ninety six great ones. Well, guess what? Those
four stick in your head. And they actually do, in my case, help me to make myself a better
speaker, a better trainer. So, I think that the persistence, persistence, desire, commitment,
those are the three things that I would answer most to that question.
