– Before you apply to a specific company, consider the following steps to discover if the company promotes the
type of inclusive culture that you are seeking. One, review the company website and job announcements. Do they call out to the LGBT community? If so, how do they do that? Two, review an employee handbook or an annual report if possible. Does the company use inclusive language in policies impacting
an employee’s family? For example, does it refer to spouse or domestic partner, rather
than or in addition to husband or wife? As you are crafting your disclosure, think about these three questions. One, if and when you
would like to disclose. Two, why do you feel you must disclose? And three, what results are
you seeking by disclosing? Based on the organization
and your research, it may be more appropriate to disclose in your interview or later
to your immediate team versus the entire organization. Once you’ve done your research and come to a decision that you
are comfortable with, you can make the best decision about your job search.
