Being a lawyer in the 21st century is an exciting time of change. Outcome oriented and business savvy problem solving is the kind of support clients are asking from their lawyers. From the perspective of an inhouse lawyer, the things that make you successful for us are having practical skills, and those practical skills are project management and negotiation. Negotiation skills I would use every single day in different capacities. A good negotiation and a good negotiated outcome is one where the parties feel confident and conformable enough to walk away from the table, despite having put a lot of work into the negotiation, if they are not getting the best outcome they can. I think if you are interested in solving problems, in developing skills that will serve you in life and in the practice of law, particularly being able to negotiate, to collaborate, to problem solve it is a great experience! And this is the future, I think it will change the training of aspirants. They will no longer be trained simply in law or individual processes but there will be a complete school of dispute management.
