Hi, I’m Linda Wooldridge and I’m a home schooling
mom. So what are the qualifications for home schooling your child with down syndrome? Most
states feel that any parent is qualified to home school their child whatever their abilities.
You may want to check to make sure that there aren’t additional restrictions in your state
for any particular educational difficulties that you’re dealing with such as down syndrome.
Beyond that, you need to think about whether or not you feel qualified and capable and
ready to offer all the support that your child needs. You may be able to access some specialized
programs through your school system, but you will be responsible for finding those programs
and for getting your child to and from those programs. If you feel that these sorts of
things are more than you’re willing to take on, that’s okay too. There are more, there’s
more than one way to home school or to educate any child. If you choose to home school your
down syndrome child, you do need to remember that you will be with that child twenty-four,
seven, and that can be a great blessing. It can also be a difficulty if you have a child
who is high needs. In any case, go into it with your eyes open. Research what things
you have available to you as the parent of a down syndrome child. Choosing curriculum
will be easy because you will choose what is a good match for your child. And you need
to check what the requirements are in your school district so that you have your child
properly registered, particularly if you want to use any of the school system’s programs
to help you in educating your child. And that’s it. You’re now qualified to home school your
down syndrome child. I’m Linda Wooldridge. Have a great home schooling day.
