YOU’RE WATCHING THE LOCAL NEWS NETWORK. I’M WENDY GRAHAM SETTLE. ESCALANTE MIDDLE SCHOOL SIXTH-GRADERS LEARNED
HOW TO PROPERLY HOLD THEIR FORKS AND KNIVES, SAY PLEASE AND THANK YOU, AND TO WAIT PATIENTLY
IN THE BUFFET LINE AT A RECENT LUNCHEON HELD AT THE HIMALAYAN RESTAURANT IN DURANGO. THE ETIQUETTE LESSON WAS PART OF AN EXPEDITIONARY
LEARNING SEGMENT ON THE MEANING OF CITIZENSHIP AND CIVILITY. EXPEDITION IS REALLY JUS POSING A QUESTION
AND ALLOWING THE STUDENTS TO EXPLORE THAT QUESTION THROUGH THEIR LEARNING. THEY’RE MULTIDISCIPLINARY, SO IT’S USUALLY
LANGUAGE ARTS, SOCIAL STUDIES, MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE ALL WOVEN INTO ONE. AND WE LIKE
TO INCORPORATE SERVICE LEARNING AS A PART OF OUR EXPEDITIONS. THIS EXPEDITION IS REALLY BASED AROUND CITIZENSHIP. AND OUR GUIDING QUESTION IS HOW IS CITIZENSHIP
USED TO SHAPE THE WORLD AROUND US? STUDENTS EXPLORED THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN
MANNERS AND CIVILITY AND LEARNED HOW ONE CULTURE’S POLITE GESTURES MIGHT OFFEND THOSE IN ANOTHER
CULTURE. GOOD CITIZENSHIP, THEY LEARNED, REQUIRES PEOPLE
TO WORK COOPERATIVELY, AND WORKING COOPERATIVELY DEPENDS ON HOW WELL YOU TREAT OTHERS. KIDS, SOMETIMES THESE DAYS, ARE NOT TAUGHT
MANNERS IN THE SAME WAY THAT MAYBE WE ONCE WERE TAUGHT MANNERS. AND AS TEACHERS, WE REALLY CAN’T HOLD KIDS
ACCOUNTABLE FOR THINGS THEY DON’T KNOW. IT’S OUR JOB TO TEACH THEM. POLSTER SAID THAT TEACHING STUDENTS HOW TO
PLACE A NAPKIN ON THEIR LAP, PROPERLY USE A KNIFE AND FORK WHILE DINING, AND TO PRACTICE
SAYING PLEASE, THANK YOU, AND EXCUSE ME, ARE BASIC MANNERS THAT WILL SERVE STUDENTS WELL
WHEN THEY ENTER THE WORKFORCE. I THINK IT SERVES OUR KIDS FOR THE REST OF
THEIR LIVES, FOR HOW TO BE APPROPRIATE IN A BUSINESS INTERVIEW, FOR HOW TO BE APPROPRIATE. WHEN YOU’RE TALKING TO YOUR BOSS, FOR HOW
TO BE APPROPRIATE WHEN YOU APPLY FOR A JOB. AND SO THESE ARE THINGS THAT THEY NEED. FOR ONE POLITE SIXTH-GRADER, THE LESSONS HAD
MORE IMMEDIATE APPLICATION. WHEN IS IT IMPORTANT? BECAUSE SOMETIMES IF SOMEBODY BRINGS YOU OUT
SOMEWHERE AND YOU DON’T HAVE GOOD MANNERS, THEY MIGHT NOT BRING YOU SOMEWHERE AGAIN. IF YOU’D LIKE TO KNOW MORE ABOUT ESCALANTE
